WHY COASTAL SHIELD
Exterior Doors Built for Lowcountry Homes
An exterior door in the Charleston area has to do more than look good. Heat, humidity, wind-driven rain, and coastal conditions can expose weaknesses in the door, jamb, and installation over time.
We regularly replace doors with rotted jambs, visible daylight around the frame, air gaps, poor operation, and aging materials. The details behind the finished door matter just as much as the door itself.
01
Rot-Resistant Materials
100% PVC jambs come standard on our exterior door installations, helping eliminate one of the most common sources of future rot and maintenance.
02
Clean, Tight Installation
Proper fit and sealing help eliminate daylight, drafts, difficult operation, and the loose, rickety feel that often comes with aging doors.
03
Designed for Your Home
Door swing, traffic flow, sidelites, glass, hardware, and configuration all matter. We help you think through those decisions before anything is ordered.
Premium materials aren’t an upgrade here. They’re part of how we believe the job should be done.

INSTALLATION DETAILS MATTER
A Better Door Installation Starts Behind the Trim
A premium door won’t perform like one if the materials around it fail.
When we remove an existing door, we inspect the opening for deterioration and address rotten or damaged material within our scope before the new system is installed. Our exterior door installations use 100% PVC jamb material as standard, not as an upgrade.
We finish the interior with trim selected to blend naturally with your home, so the finished installation looks like it belongs there instead of looking like a replacement was simply dropped into the opening.
DESIGNED AROUND REAL LIFE
Your Door Should Work With the Way You Live
One of the most overlooked parts of replacing a door is how it affects the room around it. A door can look beautiful on paper but become frustrating if its swing blocks furniture, interrupts a walkway, or takes up usable floor space.
During your consultation, we look at the entire opening and how you actually use the space, not just the measurements. We’ll help you think through swing direction, configuration, glass, privacy, hardware, finishes, sidelites, and other details so the finished door works as well as it looks.
The door is only part of the project. The opening, jamb, trim, fit, and layout all matter too.
STORM PROTECTION
Impact vs. Non-Impact Exterior Doors
Both can be good options. The right choice depends on your home, location, budget, and how you want to prepare when a storm threatens the Lowcountry.
BUILT-IN PROTECTION
Impact-Rated Doors
Impact-rated exterior doors are designed and tested as part of a storm-protection system, giving homeowners protection without installing separate panels over the opening before a storm.
For many Lowcountry homeowners, the biggest advantage is simple: protection is already built into the door you use every day.
ANOTHER OPTION
Non-Impact Doors
Non-impact doors can still be an option depending on the home and location. Where impact protection is required, a non-impact opening needs an approved alternative method of protection.
That can mean permanent bolts fastened into the structure around the doorway so protective panels can be installed before a storm. Those attachment points remain visible and protrude from the surrounding area, which some homeowners find inconvenient or unattractive in an everyday entrance.
Not Sure Which One You Need?
You don’t need to figure it out before calling us. We will walk you through the requirements and the real-world differences in cost, appearance, convenience, and storm preparation so you can choose what makes sense for your home.

COMMON QUESTIONS
Exterior Door Replacement Questions, Answered
Do I need an impact-rated exterior door in Mount Pleasant or Charleston?
It depends on your home’s location, applicable building requirements, and how you plan to protect the opening during a storm. Impact-rated doors provide built-in protection, while some homes may use a compliant non-impact door paired with an approved protection method. Andy will explain what applies to your home during your consultation.
What’s the difference between an impact and non-impact door?
Impact-rated doors are designed and tested to resist storm debris as part of the door system itself. Non-impact doors may require separate storm protection, which can mean permanent attachment points around the doorway for approved panels. We’ll help you compare the difference in cost, appearance, convenience, and storm preparation.
How much does a replacement front door cost?
Exterior door pricing varies widely based on size, impact rating, glass, sidelites, transoms, hardware, finish, and configuration. Because those options can change the project significantly, the most accurate way to get a price is an in-home consultation based on your actual opening and design choices.
How long does exterior door replacement take?
Many straightforward door installations can be completed in as little as half a day, depending on the existing opening and any repair work needed. Sliding door projects can sometimes move from consultation to installation in about six weeks, while custom hinged doors are often closer to eight weeks. Manufacturer lead times and project complexity can affect timing.
Can you replace a rotten door jamb?
Yes. We inspect the opening when the existing door is removed and repair rotten or damaged material that falls within our scope before installing the new system. If we uncover something that requires another specialty trade, we’ll explain it clearly and can recommend someone qualified.
What type of jamb do you use?
100% PVC jamb material comes standard on our exterior door installations. PVC won’t rot the way traditional wood jamb material can, making it a strong low-maintenance choice for Charleston’s humid coastal climate.
Can I customize the color, glass, and hardware?
Yes. Exterior doors can be customized with colors, finishes, decorative or clear glass, grids, hardware, sidelites, transoms, and different configurations. We help homeowners narrow those choices down based on the home’s architecture, privacy needs, budget, and how the door will actually be used.
What brands of exterior doors do you install?
We frequently install Therma-Tru hinged and entry doors, along with PGT and ViWinco sliding glass doors. We can also source other manufacturers through our supplier network when another product is a better fit for the home or project.
Do you install sliding glass doors?
Yes. Sliding glass and patio door replacement is one of our core exterior door services. We install both impact and non-impact systems for patios and larger openings, including products from PGT, ViWinco, and other trusted manufacturers.
Can you change which direction my door swings?
In many situations, yes. Swing direction is one of the details Andy reviews during the consultation because it can dramatically affect traffic flow, furniture placement, and usable floor space. We’ll look at how the room functions before finalizing the configuration.
Do you install interior doors or garage doors?
No. Coastal Shield specializes in exterior replacement projects. We do not install interior doors or garage doors, and we do not provide door refinishing, painting, glass-only replacement, screen repair, or creation of new structural openings.
